Sugar Ray

info: What can be said about Sugar Ray that hasn't already been said about Sugar Ray? As the second half of the smashrays namesake, they are obviously integral to the genre's definition. Aside from the musical elements (rap-lite over playful guitar riffs, record scratching, a laid back and fun chorus) they add everyday objects to the joyful cannon: scooters, plaid sweater vests, frosted tips, just joking pranks, most of California. Some sad elements are contributed as well: leather wrist bands, eating cereal for a very late lunch, and pyjama pants in the place of regular pants. Despite all this cultural confusion, the songs persisted against trends and market forces. The surprise success of the popped over pop in "Fly" led to the extremely casual feelings of "Every Morning" and near perfection of the genre with "Someday". Ironically, the string of hits dried up with "When it's over" though in reality, it wasn't even close to over. Lead singer Mark McGrath famously went on to host Entertainment Tonight, right as the millennium turned, as did our attention from watching whatever crap is on TV (e.g. ET) to a diet of highly curated streams and torrents. Note carefully that the catalogue is absolutely stuffed with nu metal, alt-poprock drivel, wannabe sk8 rock, and what can only be described as album filler.
